Richard was born in 1978 straight into the world of Horse Racing, his father, Russell Hobson, being a successfull trainer during the 60's & 70's.
Richard moved to France in 1989, finishing his education in a French school. Opting not to go to College, he went to jockey school near Paris and served his apprenticeship with French trainer Guy Paris.
In his mid teens Richard went to Virginia, USA, where his older brother Simon was already making a name for himself as a jump jockey and is now a successful trainer in Middleburg, USA. Simon took him under his wing and gave him valuable experience in race riding. Richard went on to ride his first winners in America.
On his return to England Richard was initially apprenticed as a jump Jockey to Gold cup and Champion hurdle winning jockey turned trainer Graham McCourt. He then moved on as a professional National Hunt Jockey, riding for several different trainers in his 14 year career with considerable success. Also during this period, he gained experience schooling horses alongside many champion level jockeys including Richard Dunwoody, Hywell Davies and Tom Morgan. Throughout his career he has also ridden winners in France and Italy.
On retiring from race riding, Richard launched himself into his new career as a Bloodstock Agent. His ability to speak fluent French along with his good eye for a horse has increasingly helped him in the buying of high quality horses from France. To date many of his purchases have won, including 10 graded jump races.
